MISSION
ABOUT / 001
Sevenbitlabs is new. The ambition behind it is not.
This began as my idea for a technology company in Nigeria. It is growing into something more ambitious: a place where African questions can lead to serious research and useful inventions.
01 / The beginning
Why Sevenbitlabs exists.
Sevenbitlabs began with a love of building technology. But the more I thought about the problems around us, the clearer it became that building products was only part of the answer. We also need the time and courage to ask why those problems exist and to test better answers.
That is the ambition: to grow, patiently, into a research lab known for thoughtful questions, responsible work, and ideas that are genuinely useful to people.
02 / Mission + vision
What we are trying to build.
VISION
An Africa that is known not only as a market for new technology, but as a place where important ideas and discoveries begin.
03 / Philosophy
Three promises we want to keep.
01
People come first
No result is worth getting by exploiting the people or communities behind it.
02
Share the work
Open the methods, tools, and credit whenever doing so is safe and fair.
03
Think beyond the next launch
Build knowledge and capability that will still matter years from now.
04 / Our values
How we want to behave while we build.
- 01
Tell the truth
Be clear about the evidence, the limits, the mistakes, and where the money comes from.
- 02
Stay open
Let people see how decisions are made and make the work available when it is responsible to do so.
- 03
Make room
Put African voices and different kinds of expertise in the room when the questions are chosen.
- 04
Choose usefulness over hype
Judge progress by whether people are better off, not by attention, citations, or valuation.
- 05
Begin here
Build from African realities instead of importing assumptions and changing the location.
- 06
Stay curious, stay accountable
Give bold ideas room to grow without putting them above people or ethics.
05 / Governance
Good intentions will need real checks.
As the lab grows, research decisions should not rest on one person's judgement. Proposals will need scientific review, clear ethics checks, open reporting, and people willing to challenge the work.
Not built yet
Those structures are not operating yet. As we put them in place, we will publish who is responsible, how decisions are made, and where concerns can be raised.
Review the ethics approach06 / Funding
How we hope to fund the work.
01
Research grants
Public or private grants for work that fits the mission.
02
Partnerships
Shared funding with universities, governments, and development organisations.
03
Ideas that become products
If research creates commercial value, put some of it back into the next question.
04
Philanthropic support
Long-term support for important work that may not have a quick commercial return.
The principle is simple: money should make good research possible, not decide which answers we are allowed to find.
